The most interesting research was around electric planes. I thought you could, found some websites that supported that, and put them in. Of course, we just had the first electric plane circumnavigate the globe.

Our social fabric is resilient in many ways, but our distributions systems and our ability to handle what amounts to a national level problem driven by a fearful population, real scarcity, storms, and illness is low. BC: Some way to write, water, food including dog food , protection from the elements, power.
Is that conversation over, or can we look forward to more? BC: The conversation with that book is over as far as I know — the creative process is a strange and wonderful thing. BC: Well, I have three more books in my head in this world, assuming readers decide they want to go back to it. Sage has only explored the world right around her, things she can walk to. In the opening scene, we see a plane. Where did that plane come from? Too much more would be spoilers….

I was drawn to that. I also enjoyed the fairy godmothers in Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. I love the idea of taking magic to make good things happen for others. I adored having my mom read me fairy tales from all over the world. JLN: Puss in Boots. I like anything in which the cat comes out on top. Every time I think of her throwing the prince over her shoulder, I laugh.
JLN: Anansi, the spider. I first came across him in my grammar school library. I thought he was clever and funny. He put himself into dangerous situations, but managed to get out of them with cheeky good humor. In the Grimm version, she is forced to dance until she falls down dead. Andersen was a little more gentle to her — she only loses her feet.
To give it steampunk flavor, I made the shoes a 19 th century technological marvel. I gave the ending a twist, but the conclusion fits with the spirit of the original stories. JLN: I loved the idea of playing with faerie tales. I think most, if not all, of the traditional stories could be adapted.

Please tell us about it. The hero, Lord Thomas Kinago, is a young noble who is creative, rich, curious, confident, and sometimes totally lacking in common sense. His aide-de-camp is a tremendously competent and intelligent man who pulls him out of trouble. I liked to read and re-read the faerie tales—retold by many authors—just to see how different authors played with the stories.
I still have a lot of those books on my shelves and re-read them often. But of the European variety I do like the Grimm versions the best.
